Care
Caring for your piano is very important. There are many ways to ensure that a new or refurbished piano will stay in good condition for a long, long time.
Exterior
Be sure to keep drinks, food and moist items (like plants) from the surface of your piano. Regular cleaning with a damp, soft, cotton cloth, and for older pianos an occasional polish (avoid aerosol sprays with silicone), will keep the cabinet stain- and dust-free. Be sure to cover your keys when the piano is not in use, and occasionally wipe them down with a damp cloth and dry them immediately. Ivory keys need to be exposed to light occasionally to prevent yellowing.
Interior
The “action” of a piano, or the swing of the hammer that strikes the string, is a precise mechanism, and can change due to humidity or wear. An occasional “action regulation” will adjust the arrangement and help maintain the responsive qualities of the keys.
Environment
Extreme temperature and humidity changes can affect your piano. Dryness will cause the piano’s pitch to go flat; moisture can make it go sharp. A piano is best kept in an environment with 40-50% humidity and a moderate temperature. Keep air conditioners on in summer, and add humidifiers in winter. There are also humidity regulators that can be installed within the piano.
Service
You should have your piano serviced 2-4 times during the first year, and two times a year thereafter. This includes tuning, and action regulation. As always, a professional such as us should perform the service.
Moving
If you are moving a piano, we recommend that you contact us. Regular movers may not understand the delicate nature of your piano. We can move it for you, or pack it into the moving van you have rented. We can also arrange for a specialized piano mover on the other end if we aren’t nearby. It is recommended that after your piano has had some time to adjust to the new environment, that you service it both for tuning and action regulation.
